Understanding copyright gives you the means to gain financially from your work and prevents others from copying it.

Your work for the exhibition must not be copied from other people’s work or their photos.

Copyright exists as soon as your work is completed and lasts for your lifetime plus seventy years. It is a good idea to sign your picture, date it and mark it with ©, the international symbol.

If your artwork is created in the course of employment, your employer would be the copyright owner.

Copyright protects you from the copying of your work; selling copies; or posting on the Internet.

This information is taken from SAA Paint magazine, Jan 2008; from an article by Joanne Milmoe.
